Opioid Abuse and Prevention

Town of Dracut

What are Opioids? Opioids are substances that act on receptors in the brain to produce a morphine-like effect. They include various prescription   painkillers such as Vicodin, Hydrocodone, Codeine, Fentanyl and Percocet.  Illegal opioids include heroin, illegally produced fentanyl and illegally obtained prescriptions. Often various drugs are mixed together to produce different effects.

Is there a crisis? Yes.  In 2014 there were 1256 Opioid related deaths across the state affecting 75 percent of the towns and cities.  The numbers for 2015 and 2016 will be much higher. The Town of Dracut and the surrounding towns average several deaths a month due to overdoses in 2016. Worse, fentanyl is now providing a cheap and powerful Opioid for illegal use.

But what should I do?  The problem is growing but so are the resources to fight this crisis.  If you have children consider educating them.   If you use or may need pain killers understand the risks and dangers. If you have old prescriptions dispose of them ( Free Prescription Disposal Pouches Available). If you have a loved one or friend who is fighting addiction there are resources to help.  You could save a loved one by learning about Narcan.  Included is a list of valuable resources:
