The closing of Lakeview Avenue at the Dracut-Lowell line for four months to replace a culvert under the roadway was not beneficial to businesses in that area.
It did, however, prove to be beneficial for one prospective business.
Excellent Dieudonne, co-owner of One-Stop Uniforms, would normally drive Lakeview Avenue to get from his Dracut home to Lowell.
“When the road closed, I took a left onto Pleasant Street and saw this building was for rent,” Excellent said.
The building is at 145 Pleasant Street, at the corner of Sladen Street. Excellent and his wife, Marjorie, were looking for a spot to relocate their business, One Stop Uniforms, which was formerly located on Gorham Street in the Back Central section of Lowell but was displaced because of a fire in the building.
“We chose not to reopen in Lowell,” Excellent said.
That was a fortuitous decision when they found the vacant building in the Navy Yard. They reopened their business at the new site in November.
Dracut Economic Development held a ribbon-cutting for One Stop Uniforms on December 5.
“One of the main reasons we decided to open in Dracut is that there’s nothing like it in town,” said Excellent, who has lived with Marjorie and their three kids in Dracut for close to 20 years. “You know, location, location, location. And we thought, why not serve our community?”
They believe that once someone buys a product at One Stop Uniforms, they’ll be a customer for life because of the personal attention they’ll receive.
“They can see that if there are any problems, they’re going to deal with one person, not a corporation,” Excellent said.
In addition to uniforms and scrubs, One Stop Uniforms also stocks other clothing items and shoes, as well as accessories for medical professionals, including stethoscopes.
