What to Do If You’re a Victim of Identity Theft

  1. Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit file.
  2. Report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at identitytheft.gov.
  3. Contact your local police department to file a report and retain documentation for your records.
  4. Review your financial accounts and credit reports for unauthorized activity.
  5. Contact any relevant check verification companies or banks if your checks or banking information were stolen.
